Who We Are
Hookswain is a unique place — a digital piscatoribus sacrum where like-minded anglers can come together to share ideas, information and inspiration free from algorithms, retargeting and search engine optimization.
We believe in good writing. Moreover, we believe that good writing is never made better by advertorial, listicles or pay-for-play content. You won’t find any of that within these pages — we are 100% reader-funded, and damn proud of it.
Why Subscribe?
Subscribing signs you up for the weekly newsletter from Hookswain, a unique mixture of articles from our verticals, essays and insights about fly fishing and the culture which surrounds it.
But it’s also the best way to show your support.
Free subscriptions help us grow our audience, while paid subscriptions underwrite our editorial efforts and help us pay our stable of talented (and notable!) creatives for their work.

Quartermaster
We love gear. From the hand-me-down to the surplus, the mended and the mint. Quartermaster is a regular offering for paid subscribers where you’ll learn about our perennial favorites and latest obsessions.
Inside each issue you’ll find in-depth info about products from reels to books, with direct links to places like eBay, auction houses, and other purveyors from around the web.
Wind Knots
All subscribers, free and paid, will enjoy Wind Knots, our space reserved for trip- and location-specific essays and articles. Whether it’s redfish off the Texas coast or northern pike in the hinterlands of Saskatchewan, Wind Knots is dedicated to the self reflection that often crops up after an adventure on the water.
Benchcraft
From fly tying to rod building and much (much) more, we’re dedicated practitioners of DIY. ‘Benchcraft’ is a space devoted to the craft and art that surrounds fly fishing.
